what happened in dallas? the assassination of john kennedy. host: independent vermont senator bernie sanders joins us from capitol hill this morning. thank you for being with us. should democrats be ready to walk away from the bargaining table, as you the congress, addressed this fiscal cliff? should democrat be willing to say, if we cannot get what we want, we are willing to go over the cliff, essentially? guest: we all want to do everything we can to see that the fiscal cliff is avoided. what we have seen in the past is a level of obstructionism on the part of republicans to say, it is either my way or the highway. elections have consequences. democrats had a strong victory, the president won big. democrats won 25 out of 33 cents in the senate -- seats in the senate. one of the key issues in the campaign was whether or not we would extend tax breaks for the wealthiest people in the country. virtually every debate, every statement the president made, every speech, he said, i will not extend those tax breaks. i think the american people voted

the front page of the "dallas morning news," or "fort worth star-telegram," "gop shifts on immigration." it was amazing to see that we were going to come in here and label them anti-hispanic, anti- anything, and it was a total different route. some friends of mine said that we need to take this to the national level. we went to the national platform in tampa and started talking about it. we got a national guest worker endorsement of the national convention platform, which was great. election day hits, and on wednesday by phone starts getting blown up again, that it is time to, that we need to start talking more about this. i believe that free-market solutions are part of this. i believe in strong border security. anti-immigration groups try to label us open borders, big business, wants cheap labor. if we could fund blackwater security forces in iraq, we need to do that. in texas, i have been down firsthand to see the devastating effect it has on property owners, on everything. we need to look at every option available. it is in our national security to do so. i am not for broken border

what happened in dallas? sunday at 7:30 eastern. president obama says he and congressional leaders have urgent business to do mentioning tax rates for the middle class and job creation. the statement came before a meeting with congressional leaders at the white house. >> i want to welcome the congressional leadership here and thank them for their time. i think we're all aware that we have some urgent business to do and we got to make sure that taxes don't go up on middle class families, that our economy will remain strong, that we're creating jobs and that is an agenda that democrats and republicans and independents, people all across the country share. so our challenge is to make sure that we are able to cooperate together, work together, find some common ground, make some tough compromises, build some consensus to do the people's business and what folks are looking for and i think all of us agree on this is action. they want to see that we are focused on them, not focused on our politics here in washington. so my hope is that this
